Sectors and Portals
The Atlantic Forest Great Reserve is subdivided into four main Sectors. These regions have unique and complementary features, distinct histories in their relationship with tourism and nature conservation. This sectorization allows both the promotion and strengthening of joint actions by people from the region as well as to facilitate the access of visitors based on the experiences being sought. In practice, some places and attractions of the Great Reserve have already been consolidated as touristic regions for decades, but these regions work independently and unbundled, becoming isolated destinations, which mainly meet a local or state demand for tourism, but are insufficient to reach larger scales, such as the national or even international market.
Each Sector of the Great Reserve presents extremes in its territory with consolidated attractions and areas where tourism is less developed, this generates a mutual opportunity, where the better-known areas work as an “anchor” attracting people, and the less known attractions diversify the menu of options and allow longer stays and complete packages being offered in these areas.
They all have their own characteristics and challenges, and this establishes a fruitful ground, not only for partnerships between entrepreneurs, tourism operators, municipalities, and institutions, but also a possibility for exchanging experiences and interchanges between regions. In this way, the Grand Reserve functions as a platform that promotes joint work at different levels for a common purpose, which is the development based on the diverse natural, cultural, and historical heritage of this entire region.
