Litoral do Paraná Sector

The Litoral do Paraná Sector is the true core of the Atlantic Forest Great Reserve, both for its central position and for its amazing natural diversity, which ranges from the Serra do Mar mountain range to the beautiful bays, beaches, and islands.

Within the Litoral do Paraná Sector, there are well-preserved colonial cities. Good examples are Morretes, Antonina, Guaraqueçaba, and the harbor city Paranaguá, combined with small caiçara communities such as Ilha Rasa and Superagui. Paranaguá Bay is the second largest in Brazil, its calm waters are filled with small islands and mangroves that provide habitat to unique wildlife. Meanwhile, the Guaratuba Bay, is well preserved thanks to the protected areas present here, and is the source of the best oysters in the south of the country, besides being ideal for sailing or stand-up paddling. Guaras, biguás, red-tailed amazons and atobás fly all over this region.

In the Serra do Mar, there is a combination of diverse environments that go from the lowlands to the top of the mountains, where crystalline rivers, streams and waterfalls stand out. There are two National Parks: the Saint Hilaire-Lange National Park, which has ecotourism activities that allow visitors to hike through wonderful landscapes, in addition to being a source of water for the population that lives in its surroundings; and the Guaricana National Park, which is one of the main refuges for large mammals in the entire Atlantic Forest Great Reserve.

On the coast, both the Superagui National Park and the Ilha do Mel State Park offer a wide variety of accommodations to access the restinga, lowland forests, and paradisiacal beaches. Superagui is regarded as the entry point to search for the endemic and endangered black-faced lion tamarin. The well-known coastal towns of Guaratuba, Matinhos and Pontal do Paraná receive an intense flow of visitors in the search for beaches, but still maintain a large area of coastal plains and restingas that are still well protected, as in the Boguaçu and Rio da Onça State Parks.

The stunning and historic Graciosa Road is accessed from the city of Curitiba, taking the visitor to the Litoral do Paraná Sector, which can also be done via the BR-277 highway or through Santa Catarina.
