Guaraguaçu Portal

The Guaraguaçu Portal bears witness to the encounter of the bay with the ocean. It takes the name of the largest lowland river of this territory, which borders the cities of Paranaguá and Pontal do Paraná. Along its course, besides the several services offered by the community, the Ecological Road leads to the archeological site of the Sambaquis of Guaraguaçu – the largest on the coast of Paraná and the only one listed as Historical and Artistic Heritage – and to its whitewash furnace, where shells were burned and used in constructions. The sambaqui is inside the Sambaqui Indigenous Territory, a few meters from the Karaguatá Poty Village. Paranaguá Bay is home to the Ilha da Cotinga Indigenous Territory, where rituals are still performed in the opy (prayer house).

The city of Paranaguá presents much of its original architecture, a walk through the historic center is worth taking. A quick boat trip can lead the visitor to several traditional caiçara communities just across the bay. The beaches of Pontal do Paraná are a sure destination, its many bathing spots have good infrastructure for tourists. At the Shangri-lá beach is the Aldeia Guaviraty, where the indigenous people are known for their handicrafts that represent native animals.
