By State Decree-Law No. 199, dated December 30, 1943, signed by Federal Intervener Manoel Ribas, the Administrative District of Pedra Preta was created, with its territory belonging to the municipality of Bocaiúva do Sul. Around 1960, the locality of Pedra Preta was already known by the name Tunas, and under this name, it was elevated to the category of an emancipated municipality on April 30, 1990, through State Law No. 9,236, enacted by Governor Álvaro Fernandes Dias. The territory was separated from the municipality of Bocaiúva do Sul, and State Law No. 10,230, dated December 28, 1992, changed the name to Tunas do Paraná. The official installation of the municipality took place on January 1, 1993.
