Until 1938, Matinhos was directly linked to Guaratuba, the municipality under whose jurisdiction it fell. At that time, by an act of Intervener Manoel Ribas, Guaratuba lost its political autonomy and became part of the municipality of Paranaguá. Since Matinhos was territorially part of Guaratuba, it also passed to the jurisdiction of Paranaguá. By Law No. 613 of January 27, 1951, Matinhos was elevated to the status of a district, directly linked to Paranaguá. It eventually separated from Paranaguá on June 12, 1967, through State Law No. 05, enacted by Governor Paulo Pimentel, thereby achieving the status of an emancipated municipality.
