Guaratuba

Founded on April 29, 1771, Guaratuba has a population of 36,595 inhabitants, according to the 2018 IBGE estimate. The first inhabitants of the land, the Carijós Indians, gave the location the name Guaratuba, which means “many scarlet ibises” in their native language, due to the large number of these red birds that inhabited the area. On April 29, 1771, the settlement was elevated to the category of a town (vila) under the name Vila de São Luíz de Guaratuba da Marinha. A grand celebration took place on that day, culminating in the celebration of Holy Mass by Parish Priest Bento Gonçalves Cordeiro, assisted by Friar João Santana Flores and Friar Francisco Borges. The first sworn-in mayor of Guaratuba was Manoel Antonio de Souza, elected in the vote held on September 21 of the same year. On October 20, 1938, by force of State Decree-Law No. 7,573, the municipality of Guaratuba was abolished, becoming a district with its territory belonging to the municipality of Paranaguá. It was only on October 10, 1947, through Law No. 02, that municipal autonomy was restored, with the municipality being re-installed on October 25 of the same year.
