O distrito de Cajati foi criado em 30 de novembro de 1944, no povoado de Corrente, território do município de Jacupiranga, por sua vez fundado em 1864. Seu desenvolvimento, contudo, foi bastante lento devido à dificuldade de comunicação, comum às cidades daquela região. Assim, somente em 30 de dezembro de 1991 Cajati emancipou-se de Jacupiranga, tornando-se município autônomo.
