Antonina was born from the gold mines and “faisqueiras” (surface gold deposits) that existed in the region in the mid-17th century. In 1714, the construction of a chapel in honor of the Virgin of Pilar was authorized in this small village; thus, September 12, 1714, became considered the founding date of Antonina. Known as “Capela” (Chapel), its inhabitants were called “capelistas.”
