The Paranapiacaba Range is the place “from where one sees the sea,” named as such by the region’s first inhabitants, the indigenous Tupi people. Located north of the city of Registro, this Portal provides easy access to Brazil’s history and the nature of the Atlantic Forest through cities such as Sete Barras, São Miguel Arcanjo, Pilar do Sul, Tapiraí, Capão Bonito, and Eldorado. Water springs forth generously and abundantly from the conserved forests of the Upper Paranapanema watershed, ensuring the water supply for thousands of people in the state of São Paulo.
The region offers itineraries for all tastes, especially in protected natural areas, where exuberant biodiversity is easily observed, alongside the culture of so many peoples who have shaped the strength of the local populations. The quilombola and indigenous communities set the cultural tone and protect the forests while producing food sustainably. The history of the gold rush is found in the names of the cities and in the legends told and retold with expert narratives by the region’s residents. Adventure, contemplation, biodiversity, history, and culture make the Portal Serra de Paranapiacaba a true treasure of the Atlantic Forest Great Reserve.
