data-index-in-node=\"21\">Mata Atl\u00e2ntica<\/i><span class=\"\">) is the second-largest tropical forest in South America,<\/span><span class=\"\"> second only to the <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"1\" data-index-in-node=\"112\">Amazon<\/b><span class=\"\">.<\/span><span class=\"\"> Originally,<\/span><span class=\"\"> its cover extended along the Brazilian coast from the state of Rio Grande do Norte to Rio Grande do Sul,<\/span><span class=\"\"> reaching inland as far as Paraguay and the Argentine province of Misiones.<\/span><\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"2\"><span class=\"\">It was the first environment encountered by Portuguese colonizers over 500 years ago and has always enchanted the naturalists who passed through,<\/span><span class=\"\"> including prominent figures such as <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"2\" data-index-in-node=\"182\">Auguste Saint-Hilaire<\/b><span class=\"\"> (1816-1822) and <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"2\" data-index-in-node=\"220\">Charles Darwin<\/b><span class=\"\"> (1832).<\/span><\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"3\"><span class=\"\">Today,<\/span><span class=\"\"> it is home to <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"21\">72% of the Brazilian population<\/b><span class=\"\">,<\/span><span class=\"\"> including some of the largest cities such as S\u00e3o Paulo,<\/span><span class=\"\"> Rio de Janeiro,<\/span><span class=\"\"> Salvador,<\/span><span class=\"\"> Recife,<\/span><span class=\"\"> Porto Alegre,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and Curitiba,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and it accounts for approximately <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"206\">70% of the national GDP<\/b><span class=\"\"> (Gross Domestic Product).<\/span><\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"4\"><span class=\"\">As a result of centuries of occupation and unchecked exploitation,<\/span><span class=\"\"> a large part of this forest\u2019s territory has been destroyed or severely altered.<\/span><span class=\"\"> It is estimated that only <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"173\">12.4%<\/b><span class=\"\"> of its original cover remains in Brazil,<\/span><span class=\"\"> which once spanned approximately 1.<\/span><span class=\"\">31 million square kilometers (or 15% of the national territory).<\/span><\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"5\"><span class=\"\">Furthermore,<\/span><span class=\"\"> most of these remnants are found in small fragments,<\/span><span class=\"\"> which are insufficient for maintaining the forest&#8217;s full biological richness.<\/span><span class=\"\"> The best-preserved areas of the Atlantic Forest in the country\u2014those that are less disturbed and capable of sheltering viable populations of its characteristic species\u2014account for only <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"329\">7%<\/b><span class=\"\"> of what once existed.<\/span><\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"6\"><span class=\"\">However,<\/span><span class=\"\"> it is this small portion that still holds the primary secrets,<\/span><span class=\"\"> beauty,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and riches of what is one of the most important forests in the world.<\/span><span class=\"\"> At this moment,<\/span><span class=\"\"> every remaining piece of this biome is extremely valuable and must be protected by all Brazilians.<\/span><span class=\"\"> May extensive continuous areas,<\/span><span class=\"\"> such as the <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"309\">Great Atlantic Forest Reserve<\/b><span class=\"\">,<\/span><span class=\"\"> serve as an inspiration to raise awareness among both locals and visitors of this biome.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element
