The Municipality of Cerro Azul originated from the Assunguy Colony, founded in 1860, north of Curitiba. The first administrators of the Colony were Barata Ribeiro, Manoel Nabuco, and Jos\u00e9 Borges. The Colony prospered rapidly, and by 1872, it was elevated to the category of a Parish (Freguesia) under the name Serro Azul and the invocation of Our Lady of Guia, belonging at that time to the Municipality of Votuverava (now Rio Branco do Sul).\n\nIn 1882, the Parish of Our Lady of Guia of Serro Azul was elevated to the category of a Town (Vila), with the denomination of Vila do Assunguy. In 1885, its name was changed to Serro Azul, due to its proximity to the hill of the same name, which belongs to a branch of the Serra Geral.
